Huawei SmartGuard: intelligent backup for residential and small commercial PV Systems

Huawei SmartGuard is an advanced backup solution for photovoltaic systems, engineered to ensure power continuity and protect critical loads during grid outages or voltage drops.

This device provides a comprehensive solution for professionals seeking enhanced safety, reliability, and optimised energy management within residential and small commercial installations.

What is Huawei SmartGuard used for?

The primary function of SmartGuard is to automatically supply essential loads during grid interruptions, switching seamlessly (≤20 ms) from the grid to battery storage or PV generation.

This ultra-fast transition ensures uninterrupted operation of critical devices such as refrigeration units, heat pumps, security systems, and other essential equipment—safeguarding both appliances and business continuity.

SmartGuard also integrates EMMA (Energy Management Assistant), Huawei’s intelligent energy management system. EMMA enables dynamic control of selected loads, including:

  • SG-Ready heat pumps
  • Shelly smart devices
  • S-Charger EV wallboxes

This allows installers to optimise self-consumption strategies and improve backup efficiency.

Where a generator is installed, SmartGuard can trigger the Automatic Transfer Switch (ATS) based on the battery state of charge, enabling a fully integrated hybrid backup architecture.

In short, SmartGuard is not simply a transfer switch- it is a fully integrated backup and smart load management system.

Inverter Compatibility

SmartGuard is compatible with Huawei’s full range of residential and small commercial inverters.

It is available in two versions:

  • SmartGuard-63A-S0 – for single-phase systems, compatible with Huawei inverter series LB0 and L1
  • SmartGuard-63A-T0 – for three-phase systems, compatible with Huawei inverter series MB0, MAP0, and M1

In systems equipped with SmartGuard, up to three MAP0 inverters can be installed per system. Other inverter series do not support multi-inverter configurations when SmartGuard is in use.

Additional Compatible Devices

SmartGuard can also be integrated with:

  • Up to two S-Charger EV wallboxes
  • Smart devices such as Shelly relays and SG-Ready heat pumps
  • Backup generators

Application Scenarios

SmartGuard is designed to support multiple installation scenarios:

Partial Backup

Automatically supplies power to essential loads during a blackout, with no manual intervention required.

Typical critical loads include lighting, refrigeration, servers, security systems, and POS terminals.

In this configuration, non-essential loads are disconnected. This reduces the battery capacity required for backup—an ideal solution for installations with limited storage capacity.

Full Backup

Ensures uninterrupted power supply to all loads within the installation.

This configuration requires a larger reserved battery capacity to sustain the entire electrical demand during grid outages.

Conclusion

Huawei SmartGuard represents a significant step forward in backup system design, combining ultra-fast switching, intelligent load management, and seamless integration with PV, storage, and auxiliary systems.

For installers and energy professionals, it offers a flexible and scalable solution to enhance system resilience, maximise self-consumption, and deliver greater value to end users.
